Fractions have always been really overwhelming for students in 5th grade at Duval Charter School at Westside. Mrs. VanDyke, 5th grade teacher, tried to find something fun that would help them better understand the concept of breaking fractions down into smaller parts. She purchased the activity and M&Ms. Each student received a handful to coincide with their worksheet. Students counted them, sorted by color, and answered each question. After Mrs. VanDyke checked for completion and accuracy, the students ate the M&M’s, of course! She was excited to see them tackle something they had been struggling with so eagerly.
